Gemini Active is the name under which George Athanas has gathered much of his working life in music. Its history does not begin with a company registration. It begins with a way of listening, continues with a creative project in Beirut, passes through a studio in Syria, and only later arrives at a legal company in the United Arab Emirates. Keeping those stages distinct is the clearest way to understand what Gemini Active is today.

A household of many musical languages

George Athanas was born into a multicultural family. He is Greek by heritage, with a Lebanese mother and a Syrian father, and both Arabic and French are his native languages. That mixture could be heard at home. His mother’s French-influenced upbringing brought Charles Aznavour and the tradition of French chanson into the house, alongside Bach, Beethoven and the major symphonic composers.

Growing up in Latakia, Syria, added a further layer: the oud and the folk traditions of the Levant, present in everyday life rather than studied from a distance. Over the years his curiosity reached further still — towards Indian instrumental folk music, Celtic music and culture, the traditions of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, and ancient music from across Asia.

None of this was a detour from a single main road. These traditions became part of one working vocabulary, and that breadth would later define the kind of work carried out under the Gemini Active name.

First songs, then Beirut

George graduated from college in 2010. By then he was already writing original songs and selling them in his hometown — a sign that, by the time he graduated, music had already moved from personal interest to professional practice.

In 2011 he moved to Beirut. The city offered many ways to work in music, and he took on a wide range of them. He performed live in bars, pubs and theatres, and he worked in recording studios in voice-over, dubbing and mixing.

The two environments taught different lessons. Performing live showed how music meets an audience in real time, without the possibility of a second take. Studio work showed how sound is recorded, edited, balanced and delivered — how a voice or an instrument becomes a finished piece of audio. Gemini Active would draw on both.

2012: a creative project takes a name

Gemini Active began in 2012 as a creative project. It was not yet a company in the legal sense. It was a name for a way of working and for a growing body of collaborations.

The name comes from George’s zodiac sign. It also carries an idea he associates with it: that the curious, creative and social energy attributed to a Gemini becomes powerful once it is activated — when curiosity is turned into work, and sociability into collaboration.

During its early years, Gemini Active was based in Beirut and worked across different artists and projects. That variety suited a musician whose listening had always crossed borders. Rather than narrowing to one style or one kind of client, the project developed through range: different voices, different briefs and different musical worlds, each adding to the experience of the next.

Syria, and a larger studio

In November 2017, George moved back to Syria, where he met Katie Ammar. The move was gradual rather than abrupt; for a period, his work in Beirut and his life in Syria overlapped.

In 2018, a larger Gemini Active studio opened in Syria, with its own rehearsal room. A rehearsal room changes how a studio works. It allows musicians to prepare together in the same place where their music will later be recorded and produced, keeping preparation and production close to one another rather than spread across separate locations.

From that studio, Gemini Active worked with clients well beyond Syria, including clients in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. The spread of that client list reflected something already true of the music itself: it was made in one place but intended to travel.

Dubai

In 2021, George and Katie moved together to Dubai. The UAE became the next base for Gemini Active’s work and for George’s wider creative career, which by then extended across composition, production, vocal work and studio practice.

Katie Ammar died on 2 March 2023.

2023: Gemini Active becomes a UAE company

Later in 2023, the UAE free-zone company carrying the Gemini Active name was legally established. The timing reflected George’s intention to carry Katie’s contribution forward into the company’s next chapter.

It is worth being precise about the dates, because they describe two different things. Gemini Active began creatively in 2012, in Beirut. The UAE company bearing its name was legally established in 2023. The first date marks the beginning of the work, the name and the approach. The second marks the moment that work took on a formal company structure in the Emirates. The company was not founded in 2012, and the creative project did not begin in 2023.

What the name carries

The idea behind the name has remained remarkably consistent. Curiosity explains the breadth of the music — the willingness to listen across traditions, from French chanson and symphonic repertoire to Levantine, Indian, Celtic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Georgian and ancient Asian music. Creativity describes the work itself. Sociability describes how that work happens: through artists, clients and collaborators rather than in isolation. Activation is the step that turns those qualities into finished music.

Across Beirut, Syria and the UAE, that combination has stayed recognisable even as the settings, the studios and the scale of the work have changed.

Continuity across three countries

Seen as a whole, Gemini Active’s history follows George Athanas through three countries and several kinds of work. In Beirut, it grew out of live performance, studio sessions, voice work and mixing. In Syria, it gained a larger studio, a rehearsal room and an international client list. In the United Arab Emirates, it gained a legal identity of its own.

What connects these stages is less a single location than a consistent way of working: wide listening, practical studio experience and an instinct for collaboration. The name chosen in 2012 described that energy before there was a company to hold it. The company established in 2023 gives that energy a formal home — and carries with it the people who helped shape the years in between.
